International Volunteer Day

December 5th is the annual observance of International Volunteer Day. It is a form of recognition for the contribution of millions of volunteers around the world. I am also a volunteer, supporting the Social Hub – a non-profit organization based in Lund, Sweden. What I do is simple: I teach Traditional Bachata and Cuban Salsa, making these dances accessible to everyone!

Volunteers are those who offer their time, skills, and knowledge to others for social purposes. These people are generally driven by noble motives with high ethical value. My dance classes are inspired by the values of sharing, inclusion, and socialization.

Among my students are people from various social backgrounds and from many parts of the world: some are students at University, others are immigrants here in search of work and/or friends. Then there are people who have come from difficult social conditions, seeking a new life while waiting for things to improve.

For one hour a week it doesn’t matter who we are, where we come from, or where we are going: we just choose to be happy and create, together, a friendly atmosphere, a peaceful environment where everyone is free to express themselves. The same applies to me: in my role, I have a lot of freedom and can creatively put into practice what I have learned.

Volunteering offers profound benefits, transforming the lives of those who receive support but also of those who provide it

My contribution is modest, but the impact is tangible. Together, we share an environment that fosters empathy and understanding of others’ struggles. The value we place on human connections turns into meaningful and lasting relationships.

To be me the person who brings all this together is an immense honor – I say this with sincere and genuine humility – and it generates in me a sense of purpose and fulfillment that adds deep meaning to my life. Leaving a positive impact on others’ lives – and indirectly on society – is a form of intangible legacy that enriches the meaning of my of existence.

For all these reasons, I am immensely grateful to the Social Hub and to the everyone who make all of this possible.
